What is the Terraformer?
The Terraformer is a special building in OGame that permanently increases the number of usable fields on a planet. Each Terraformer level creates 5 new fields — minus the field the Terraformer itself occupies, that's a net 4 new fields per level. If a Nanite Factory is also present on the planet, there's 1 bonus field per Terraformer level (so a net 5 new fields).
The Terraformer is a classic endgame building: the requirements are high, the costs enormous — but for any player seeking maximum production long-term, it's indispensable.
Requirements and Costs
To build the Terraformer, you must first fulfil a demanding prerequisite chain:
- Nanite Factory level 1 (requires Robotics Factory level 10)
- Energy Technology level 12
Both requirements are challenging themselves: the Robotics Factory must be brought to level 10 before the Nanite Factory can even be built. And Energy Technology level 12 in turn requires several other research projects. Don't plan the Terraformer as your first goal — it comes when your planet is already well established.
Fields per Terraformer Level
| Terraformer Level | New Fields (without Nanites) | New Fields (with Nanites) | Total Bonus |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | +4 | +5 | +4 / +5 |
| 2 | +4 | +5 | +8 / +10 |
| 3 | +4 | +5 | +12 / +15 |
| 5 | +4 | +5 | +20 / +25 |
| 10 | +4 | +5 | +40 / +50 |
When is the Terraformer Worth It?
Whether the Terraformer is worth it depends on two questions: How many fields does the planet have now — and how many fields does it need long-term?
Definitely build Terraformer if...
- Your planet has fewer than 130 fields and you use it as a core planet
- You've occupied all or almost all fields but want to build more buildings
- You're a miner seeking maximum production on this planet
- The Nanite Factory is already present (bonus field pays off doubly)
Terraformer less useful if...
- The planet already has 200+ fields and no capacity bottlenecks are foreseeable
- It's a purely specialist planet with few buildings
- Resources are needed for other investments with higher immediate returns
When in doubt: only build the Terraformer when your planet actually hits its field limit — not as a preventive measure in early game phases.
Nanite Factory: The Crucial Synergy
The Nanite Factory is the Terraformer's best friend. It not only provides the bonus field effect with the Terraformer, but also halves all construction times on the planet per level. A Nanite Factory at level 3 means: all buildings and ships are constructed in an eighth of the normal construction time.
Therefore: before you terraform intensively, ensure the Nanite Factory is at least level 1. The bonus field summed over many Terraformer levels is significant — and you additionally save through shortened construction times for all further buildings on this planet.
Strategic Use: On Which Planets to Build?
In a multi-planet empire, you can't fully terraform every planet — that would be too expensive. Prioritise:
- Home planet: Your oldest, best-developed planet — Terraformer here makes the biggest difference
- Small core production planet: If a colony has under 120 fields but is strategically important
- Additional planets: Only if resources are in abundance
On purely specialist planets (e.g., fleet parking, moon base) the Terraformer is usually unnecessary — few buildings are built there anyway.
