What are expeditions?
Expeditions are one of the unique mechanics in OGame. You send a fleet to the 16th sector of a galaxy — an unknown area beyond the normal play zone. What the fleet finds there is random. Resources, abandoned ships, dark matter or hostile encounters: every expedition is an adventure with uncertain outcomes.
Expeditions are not gambling in a casino sense — with an optimised fleet and Discoverer class, the expected value can be significantly increased. Many players use expeditions as a passive resource stream alongside normal production and farming.
Possible expedition results
| Result | Description | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Resource find | Metal, crystal or deuterium — limited by transporter capacity | Common |
| Ship find | Abandoned ships are added to the fleet | Occasional |
| Dark matter | Premium currency — rarer but very valuable | Rare |
| Experience | Officer experience for Fleet Officer | Occasional |
| Nothing | Empty expedition — only deuterium costs | Common |
| Pirate attack | Hostile NPC ships attack the expedition | Rare |
| Alien attack | Stronger NPC enemies — can destroy ships | Very rare |
| Time delay | Expedition takes longer than planned to return | Rare |
Optimal expedition fleet
The quality and quantity of expedition finds depends on the total value of the fleet sent — up to a universe-dependent cap value. More fleet value means bigger finds, as long as the cap isn't reached.
Basic expedition fleet composition
- Pathfinder: Gives direct bonus on expedition results — always send along
- Large Cargo Ships: For resource finds, cargo capacity must be large enough
- Combat ships: As "fleet value" for bigger finds — Battleships or Battlecruisers
- Recyclers: Optional, in case debris is created after pirate battles
Important: Don't overload the expedition slot with too many ships. Deuterium costs increase with fleet size — the expected value must exceed operating costs.
Discoverer class: The expedition specialist
The Discoverer class is the optimal choice for expedition players. It offers:
- +2 expedition slots: More simultaneous expeditions mean more passive income
- Higher find probability: Better chances for resources, ships and dark matter
- Improved phalanx range: Sensor phalanx sees further — better for attack planning
- Additional colonisation slot: One more planet possible
With Discoverer class and multiple expedition slots simultaneously, expedition gaming becomes a serious resource source — especially in slow universes where farming is more restricted.
Expedition tips for more yield
Adjust transporter capacity
One of the most common mistakes: too little transporter capacity. If the expedition finds 500,000 metal but your transporters only hold 200,000, you lose 300,000. Calculate the maximum possible find amount and bring enough transport capacity.
Always use expedition slots
Expedition slots are a time-gated resource — every hour without a running expedition is lost potential. As soon as an expedition returns, immediately send the next one. Players who consistently use their slots accumulate considerable resources in the long term.
Exploit events
Expedition events regularly take place where find amounts and probabilities for rare results are increased. During these phases it's especially worthwhile to keep all slots active and send larger fleets.
Expeditions as fleetsave
Expeditions are one of the most popular fleetsave missions. The fleet is travelling, possibly collecting something and is untouchable during the entire mission. Especially practical for overnight fleetsave — with some luck the fleet returns with bonus resources.
Astrophysics: More slots, more opportunities
Astrophysics research is essential for expedition players. It increases both the maximum number of colonies and available expedition slots. As a Discoverer player, you should actively develop Astrophysics — every additional slot means more passive income per day.
