What is Ikariam?
Ikariam is a browser strategy game set in ancient Greece. You build cities on islands, trade with neighbours, research technologies, and wage war. Getting started is straightforward, but the depth comes quickly. This guide covers your first week and the key mechanics you need to understand.
Day 1: Your First City
Building Priorities
- Academy — Build it as early as possible. Research is the key to progress in Ikariam.
- Sawmill — Your main resource at the start. Target level 10-12 first.
- Carpenter — Reduces building costs. Worth it from level 3-4.
- Warehouse — Prevents surplus resources from decaying.
Your Island's Luxury Resource
Every island in Ikariam has one luxury resource: Wine, Marble, Crystal, or Sulfur. You can only harvest your own island's resource — for the other three, you need to trade or fight. This is Ikariam's core mechanic and what makes diplomacy essential.
- Wine — Important for population happiness. Wine islands are ideal for large cities.
- Marble — Required for higher-level buildings. Highly sought in trade.
- Crystal — For advanced research and military units.
- Sulfur — For military units and ships. Essential for warfare.
The Four Research Branches
- Seafaring — Faster and stronger ships, trade capacity. Important for expansion and commerce.
- Economy — Production bonuses, storage capacity, trade bonuses. Strengthens your long-term economy.
- Science — Research points, cultural treaties, governors. Accelerates your overall progress.
- Military — New unit types, stronger defenses, siege weapons. For war and protection.
Tip: Invest in Economy and Seafaring first. Military comes later when you have something worth defending.
Expansion and Alliances
Once you've researched "Expansion," you can found cities on other islands. Ideally, build 4 cities on 4 different resource types to become self-sufficient. Joining an alliance provides protection, trade partners, and the ability to build World Wonders — massive cooperative projects that grant permanent bonuses.
