The Shipyard in OGame
The Shipyard is a planetary building in OGame that plays an important role for defensively-oriented players. When an opponent attacks your planet and your fleet is involved in the defence, some ships will be damaged in combat. Without a Shipyard, these ships are lost — with a Shipyard, they can be repaired.
The mechanic is simple but valuable: ships that survive a defensive battle with hit points above zero but have sustained damage can be repaired in the Shipyard. This saves considerable resources compared to completely rebuilding the units.
How does repair work?
After a defensive battle, you can see in the battle report which of your ships were damaged. The Shipyard calculates repair costs based on the damage sustained. Repair costs metal and crystal — always less than rebuilding the same ship.
Repair Process
- Defensive battle ends — battle report is generated
- Damaged ships are displayed in the Shipyard
- Repair costs are calculated (depending on degree of damage)
- Repair is started — takes some time
- Ships are fully operational again
What determines repair time?
Repair duration depends on the Shipyard level. A higher-level Shipyard repairs faster and can work on more ships simultaneously. For players who are regularly involved in battles, a well-developed Shipyard is therefore important to quickly become combat-ready again.
Shipyard vs. New Construction: What's cheaper?
The central question: when is the Shipyard worthwhile compared to simply building new ships? As a rule of thumb:
- Repair: Costs only a fraction of the original construction costs, depending on degree of damage
- New construction: Costs 100% of original resources and requires full construction time
Ships that survive with 90% of their original hull are almost free to repair. Ships with only 10% hull remaining need more extensive repair — but even then it's cheaper than new construction. The Shipyard is therefore almost always the more economical option when ships survive a battle.
| Remaining Hull | Repair Costs (approx.) | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 80–99% | Very low | Always repair |
| 50–79% | Low to moderate | Repair recommended |
| 20–49% | Moderate | Usually repair |
| 1–19% | Higher, but below new construction costs | Repair is cheaper |
Who benefits from the Shipyard?
The Shipyard is not equally useful for every player:
High Benefit
- Defensive miners: Those who station ships for defence and are regularly attacked benefit greatly
- Players in active wars: With frequent battles, the Shipyard pays for itself quickly
- Players with expensive fleets on planets: Battleships and destroyers are expensive — repairing them saves enormous resources
Lower Benefit
- Active fleeters with consistent fleetsave: Those who always send their fleet on missions don't lose ships in defensive battles
- Players without stationed fleets: Only defensive structures fight — these cannot be repaired
Shipyard and Moon Buildings
The Shipyard can be built on both planets and moons. Especially on moons, where players often park valuable ships or gather fleets for ACS attacks, a Shipyard can minimise valuable losses in case of attack.
Important: The Shipyard only repairs ships that participated in combat on the corresponding celestial body. Ships on other planets or moons are not included.
