The OGame Points System Overview
OGame maintains a ranking of all players in a universe. This ranking is based on a sophisticated points system that captures various aspects of the game. Players who rank high in OGame have invested heavily in their empire — whether in buildings, research, ships or defence.
The points system is transparent and comprehensible: every resource you use productively contributes to your score. This creates a fair comparison between different playstyles — miners, raiders and researchers can rank equally if they follow different paths efficiently.
How are points calculated?
The basic formula is simple: 1,000 spent resources = 1 point. This applies equally to all categories. If you upgrade a mine that costs 5,000 metal and 2,000 crystal, you receive 7 points.
What exactly counts:
- Buildings: All mines, power plants, factories and other planetary structures
- Research: All researched technologies
- Ships: Built ships on your planets and moons
- Defence: Constructed defensive installations
What doesn't count?
- Resources in storage (not yet invested)
- Dark matter and premium expenses
- Loot stolen from other players (only counts once built)
The three ranking categories
OGame divides the ranking into three main categories that reflect different aspects of the game:
Economy Rankings
The economy rankings (also overall rankings) reflect the total scope of your empire. Here, all buildings, ships, research and defensive installations count together. Those at the top have the largest and best-developed empire in the universe.
Research Rankings
The research rankings show exclusively the points accumulated through researched technologies. Players who have consistently invested in all research areas rank at the top here — from propulsion technologies through weapons technology to graviton research.
Military Rankings
The military rankings (honour points) are the combat-oriented rankings. Points here are collected through:
- Destruction of enemy ships (attack points)
- Annihilation of enemy defence
- Lost own ships in battles (recorded as losses and have a negative effect)
A high military rank signals: this player is actively involved in combat — as attacker or defender.
Newbie protection and points ratio
The points system has a direct impact on newbie protection. A stronger player can only attack a weaker one if the points ratio between both players doesn't exceed a certain limit. This protection applies automatically for new players and protects beginners from massive attacks by experienced players.
As you grow as a player and your points increase, the circle of possible attackers also grows — and at the same time the field of targets you can attack. The points system thus regulates the balance of power throughout the universe.
Strategy: Points and playstyle
Understand the points system as a tool, not as an end in itself. In OGame, high points are no guarantee of safety — quite the opposite:
- Many fleet points signal to other players: here's a valuable fleet worth raiding
- High economy points without fleet make you an attractive miner target
- Balanced development is often safer than one-sided maximisation of one category
The best players in the rankings aren't always the safest. Those who master fleetsave can maintain a valuable fleet without risking it. Points are a measure of development — real strength shows in activity and strategy.
