Why Fleet Composition is Crucial
In OGame, it's not enough to simply build many ships. The composition of your fleet determines how effective it is in combat, how much deuterium it consumes and how well you can exploit debris fields. A poorly composed fleet can lose to an optimised enemy fleet despite having a higher resource value.
The most important basic rule: every ship has a role. Combat ships fight, cargo ships carry loot, recyclers collect debris fields, espionage probes scout. A good fleet combines these roles sensibly and exploits rapid fire advantages.
Entry Fleet: Early Phase
When you're just starting with OGame, your options are limited — but there's a clear progression:
- Small Cargo: First ships, essential for fleetsave and resource transport
- Light Fighter: Cheap combat entry against weakly defended planets
- Espionage Probe: Essential for scouting targets
- Recycler: Needed as soon as debris fields appear
- Cruiser: First real step towards combat fleet — RF 6 against Light Fighters
Standard Raider Fleet (Mid-game)
| Ship Type | Role | Ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Battleship | Firepower, backbone | Base |
| Battlecruiser | RF against cargo & fighters | 30–50% of Battleships |
| Large Cargo | Transport loot | according to target resources |
| Recycler | Collect debris field | according to expected debris |
| Espionage Probe | Reconnaissance | At least 5–10 |
This composition is flexible and works against most targets. Battlecruisers with RF 3–4 against cargo ships and fighters significantly increase combat efficiency when the opponent has these ships.
Advanced Fleets
Reaper Integration
The Reaper (since OGame redesign) has RF 7 against Battleships and automatically collects debris fields. Anyone integrating Reapers into their fleet saves Recyclers whilst deploying stronger combat power. Reapers are expensive (lots of deuterium) but worthwhile for large actions.
Bombers Against Defence
When the target is heavily defended, Bombers come into play. RF 20 against Rocket Launchers and Light Laser Cannons makes Bombers the most efficient means against typical miner defence. The composition: Bombers break the defence, then Battleships and Battlecruisers take over the fleet combat.
Deathstar Deployment
A Deathstar alone is dangerous — it has catastrophic rapid fire against almost everything. Properly used in ACS attacks with other players, it's a game changer. For moon destruction (destroying moon with Deathstar's graviton cannon), it's the only means.
Farming Setup: Maximising Resources
Those who mainly harvest inactive planets (farming) optimise for loot-per-deuterium. This means:
- Maximum cargo capacity: Many Large Cargo ships for lots of loot
- Minimum combat ships: Only as much as needed to crack weak defence
- No Recyclers (when farming): Inactive players rarely have debris fields
- Prefer fast ships: Battlecruisers instead of Battleships for shorter flight times
Expedition Fleet
For expeditions, different logic applies than for combat. Expedition result quality depends on the resource value of the fleet sent — up to a maximum (universe ceiling value). Typical expedition fleet:
- Pathfinder: Gives bonus on expedition results (Discovery class recommended)
- Large Cargo: For collecting resource finds
- Combat ships: As "fleet value" for larger finds — but not too many, as deuterium costs rise
