What are Artefacts in OGame?
Artefacts are rare finds that your expedition fleet can bring back from the unknown sector 16. They differ fundamentally from normal resources or ships: Artefacts are unique collectibles that can be used for special rewards, special event mechanics or exclusive upgrades.
The mechanic is simple — but collecting them is time-consuming. Artefacts appear randomly, cannot be forced and occur less frequently than resource or ship finds. This is precisely what makes them valuable: Players who keep many expedition slots active and play the Discoverer class accumulate a meaningful amount over time.
Expedition Results Overview: Rarity Levels
| Result Type | Frequency | Value to Players |
|---|---|---|
| Resources (Metal/Crystal/Deuterium) | Common | Solid passive income |
| Nothing / Time delay | Common | No direct value |
| Ship Find | Occasional | Good — direct fleet expansion |
| Experience (Officer) | Occasional | Long-term bonus |
| Dark Matter Rare | Rare | Very high — premium currency |
| Artefacts Very rare | Very rare | High — special usage |
What are Artefacts Used For?
The use of artefacts varies depending on the current game state, universe settings and ongoing events. Basically, there are three main areas of application:
Event Currency
During certain Gameforge events, artefacts become event collection currency. Those who have accumulated enough artefacts can exchange them for event-exclusive rewards — including ship modifications, cosmetic content or resource packs. Event phases with artefact focus are communicated in advance.
Research Boosters
In some universe types, artefacts can be used for special research or technology accelerations. This mechanic is not available in all universes and depends on the server version.
General Bonus Activation
Artefacts can be redeemed for temporary production bonuses or fleet speed bonuses. This option is particularly interesting for miners and fleeters who need a short-term production boost.
Increasing Artefact Chances
Artefacts cannot be forced directly — the chance per expedition is fixed in the game system. However, you can increase the absolute number of artefact finds by maximising the total number of expeditions.
Effective Strategies
- Discoverer Class: Generally better expedition results also increase artefact chances indirectly
- Maximum Expedition Slots: More simultaneous expeditions = more chances for rare results
- Level Astrophysics: More slots unlocked through higher Astrophysics level
- Wait for Events: Expedition events sometimes also increase artefact find quantities
- Consistency: Never leave expedition slots empty — every unused hour is a missed opportunity
Pathfinder and Artefacts
The Pathfinder gives a direct bonus to expedition results. Whether this bonus also applies to artefact finds is discussed in the community — the tendency is that the Pathfinder bonus affects all result types. When in doubt: always send the Pathfinder along, it never hurts.
Collecting Artefacts: The Long-term Perspective
Anyone pursuing artefacts as a serious collection goal must understand the time dimension. With a low base probability of perhaps 1–2% per expedition and 4–6 expeditions daily, a Discoverer player statistically gets 1–3 artefact finds per week. That sounds like little — but adds up to a relevant amount over months.
Combined with event bonus phases, in which artefact chances are temporarily increased, active expedition players achieve a solid artefact reserve in the long term.
Artefacts in the Context of Expedition Strategy
Artefacts should not be the primary reason to send expeditions — resources, ships and Dark Matter are more frequent and reliable. But anyone who has optimised expeditions anyway automatically collects artefacts as a by-product.
The strategic value of artefacts increases when events start that use them as currency. Then the discipline of consistently keeping all slots filled pays off. Those who only start with expeditions then have a measurable disadvantage compared to continuous players.
