Energy Technology: What it is and what it can do

Energy Technology is one of the most fundamental research areas in OGame. It doesn't directly increase any statistics itself — it's a prerequisite research that opens the path to half a dozen important technologies and buildings. Anyone wanting to get far in OGame must research Energy Technology early and consistently.

In the Research Lab, Energy Technology starts at level 1 and can theoretically be upgraded indefinitely. Practically relevant are mainly levels 3, 5, 8 and 12 — at these points important dependent technologies unlock.

What Energy Technology unlocks

Energy Technology is a prerequisite for:

Technology / BuildingReq. Energy Tech LevelSignificance
Laser Technology1Prerequisite for many weapons + Ion Technology
Fusion Reactor (Building)3Highly efficient energy source in midgame
Ion Technology4Prerequisite for Hyperspace Technology
Hyperspace Technology5 (via Ion)Key to powerful ships + research
Terraformer (Building)12Field expansion for planets

Energy Technology is thus one of the few research areas that simultaneously prevents you from two completely different game areas if it's too low: Economy (Fusion Reactor, Terraformer) and Military (Hyperspace Technology for advanced ships).

Energy sources: Solar Plant, Fusion Reactor, Solar Satellites

Energy in OGame comes from three sources. Each has its strengths and the right timing:

Solar Plant

The Solar Plant is the first and simplest energy source. No operating costs, no prerequisites. For the first 10–15 mine levels, the Solar Plant is the backbone of energy supply. At very high levels, however, it becomes increasingly inefficient: It requires more and more fields and resources for an increasingly smaller energy gain compared to the Fusion Reactor.

Fusion Reactor

The Fusion Reactor consumes deuterium as fuel and produces significantly more energy than the Solar Plant with comparable resource expenditure. It scales excellently at high levels and occupies only one building field — ideal for planets with many mines. Prerequisite: Deuterium Synthesiser level 5, Energy Technology level 3.

From the point where you have deuterium in abundance, every well-developed planet should have a Fusion Reactor. The operating costs in deuterium are comparatively low; the energy gain is enormous.

Solar Satellites

Solar Satellites are cheap to build and deliver energy quickly — but they can be shot down. Anyone using Solar Satellites as their main energy source risks an energy failure for all mines in case of an attack. Acceptable as a short-term bridge or on very well-defended planets — not recommended as a permanent solution.

Energy Technology on the path to Graviton research

The most impressive challenge in OGame is Graviton research. It unlocks the Death Star — the strongest ship in the game that can even destroy moons. Graviton doesn't have a classic research cost structure, but a one-time condition: At the time of research, 300,000 energy must be produced on a single planet.

This is an enormous requirement. A Fusion Reactor at high level or a combination of Solar Plant and Fusion Reactor on a well-developed planet with many fields is necessary. Without strong Energy Technology and corresponding infrastructure, Graviton is unreachable.
