Why alliances in OGame are indispensable

OGame has been a multiplayer strategy game since 2002 whose social component is at least as important as the technical aspect. Alliances are the core of this social system. As an alliance member, you enjoy protection from arbitrary attacks through your alliance's political standing, benefit from coordinated actions in the Alliance Combat System (ACS) and gain access to alliance class bonuses that are not available to you alone.

Solo players are permanently at a disadvantage in OGame: no protection, no ACS possibility, no alliance bonuses. The first priority for every new starter should be to join an active alliance as early as possible.

Finding the right alliance

Not every alliance suits every player. The most important criteria when choosing:

In the alliance menu, you can search through all alliances in your universe. Most alliances have a public text with contact information and admission criteria.

Ranks and roles in an alliance

RankDescription
Founder / AdmiralComplete control: admission, exclusion, diplomacy, alliance class
Officer / ViceDelegated rights: member management, messages, often declarations of war
MemberFull alliance bonuses, access to internal forums and messages
RecruitProbation rank in some alliances before full admission

NAPs: Using non-aggression pacts strategically

NAPs (non-aggression pacts) are diplomatic agreements between alliances. An alliance with a broad NAP network has a secure rear for wars on other fronts. NAPs are not technically enforced in OGame — they rely on mutual trust and reputation.

What makes a good NAP

NAP breaking is the worst reputation damage in OGame. Alliances known for NAP breaking rarely find new partners and are actively attacked.

The Alliance Combat System (ACS)

The ACS enables coordinated attacks where multiple players send their fleets to the same target at the same time. All participating fleets fight together as one side. This allows attacks that no single player could manage — against well-defended planets, strong fleeters or during moonshots.

Successfully coordinating ACS

The Alliance Depot

The Alliance Depot is a building you can construct on your planet. It allows allied fleets to station in your orbit to help defend you. The higher the depot level, the more allied ships can be stationed. In active alliances, the Alliance Depot is an important building block for mutual defence.

Founding your own alliance

Founding an alliance is simple — leading it successfully is another matter. The following aspects are crucial:

  1. Clear concept: Which players do you want to attract? Fleeters, miners, explorers?
  2. Active core: At least 3-5 active players as a foundation
  3. Communication: Set up Discord or another external forum
  4. Diplomacy: Negotiate NAPs with neighbouring alliances early
  5. Recruitment: Actively approach and invite new players
