Ping — what is it?
Ping refers to the time it takes for a data packet to travel from your computer to the server and back. Measured in milliseconds (ms), ping is the fundamental unit of measurement for connection quality in online gaming. The lower the ping, the more instantly the game responds to your inputs.
For MMORPG players in Europe, ping is particularly important because many popular titles run on American or Asian servers. Connecting from the UK to a server in Los Angeles sends data packets nearly 10,000 kilometres — physics means that takes time, no matter how good the connection is.
What ping means in practice
In PvE content — quests, normal levelling, exploration — ping is less critical. The game waits for your inputs and lags of 100–150ms are often barely noticeable. As soon as you enter dungeons or PvP, however, that changes.
Ping and dungeon performance
In Metin2 dungeons such as Nemere or Meley, timing is crucial. Bosses have attack patterns that require evasive manoeuvres. With 20ms you see the attack and dodge in time. With 200ms you have theoretically reacted — but the server had not yet registered your dodge when the damage was already calculated.
Ping in guild war and PvP
Metin2's guild war and the realm-vs-realm PvP between Shinsoo, Chunjo, and Jinno is competitive. Players with low ping have a genuine reaction advantage. EU servers from Gameforge ensure a level playing field for European players.
Metin2 and low latency for Europe
Gameforge operates Metin2 from Europe with European server infrastructure. For players in the UK, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, this means typical ping values of 15–50ms — depending on their own internet connection and route.
| Location | Typical ping to Metin2 | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| Germany / Austria | 15–40ms | Excellent |
| United Kingdom | 20–50ms | Excellent |
| Western Europe (FR, NL, BE) | 30–80ms | Very good |
| Eastern Europe (PL, CZ, RO) | 40–100ms | Good |
Optimising ping — practical tips
Even with EU servers, high ping can result from local factors. These measures typically help the most:
- LAN cable instead of Wi-Fi: Wired connections are more stable and have less jitter than Wi-Fi
- Pause downloads: Active downloads during gaming significantly increase latency
- Disable VPN: VPNs route connections via detours — almost always resulting in higher ping
- Router restart: With persistently poor ping, a router restart often helps surprisingly well
- Choose the right server: Select the geographically nearest server in Metin2
- Close background programmes: Browsers, cloud services, and updates consume bandwidth
Why not all MMOs offer low ping for European players
Many popular MMORPGs were originally developed for the Korean or US market. The European version is often a port running on the same servers as the original — with all the consequences for latency.
Metin2 is an advantage for European players in this respect: Gameforge as a European publisher has invested in European infrastructure from the outset. That is not a minor detail — it is a structural advantage that is tangible every single day of play.
