Shields in Metin2 — Who uses them and why?
Shields are primarily the domain of the Warrior in Metin2. As the only class that regularly fights with a one-handed sword and shield, the Warrior benefits enormously from the defensive values of a good shield. Shields occupy the off-hand slot and offer physical defence, magic resistance and block chance — three values that make a tank much more durable.
Some other builds can theoretically equip shields, but in practice it is almost exclusively the Warrior who makes effective use of the shield slot. Other classes prefer the free off-hand slot for other bonuses or simply don't need shields for their playstyle.
Shield Stats: What matters?
| Stat | Effect | Importance |
|---|---|---|
| Physical Defence | Reduces incoming physical damage directly | Very high (Tank) |
| Magic Resistance | Percentage reduction of magic damage | High (PvP) |
| Block Chance | Percentage chance to completely block attacks | High (Tank) |
| Max HP | Increased health pool | Medium |
| HP Regeneration | Passive healing per time unit | Situational |
Shield Categories by Level
Shields are tiered by level ranges. As your character levels up, you should regularly upgrade your shield to keep defensive values current:
- Level 1–30: Simple wooden and leather shields with low base values
- Level 30–60: Bronze and iron shields with solid defensive values
- Level 60–80: Steel shields and improved variants
- Level 80–100: High-quality shields with additional bonuses such as magic resistance
- Level 100+: Endgame shields, including the coveted Serpent Shield
The Endgame Shield: The Serpent Shield
The Serpent Shield from the Serpent Temple is the most sought-after shield in the game for endgame players. It offers excellent base values in physical defence and combines these with high magic resistance — a combination that few other shields achieve. For tank Warriors who want to survive difficult dungeons like Meley or Jotun-Thrym, the Serpent Shield is almost indispensable.
However, the Serpent Shield cannot be further strengthened through the plus system, as shields in general cannot be improved with either ores or spirit stones. Nevertheless, a good Serpent Shield alone makes the Warrior a true defensive powerhouse, perfectly fulfilling the tank role in group dungeons.
Shield vs Two-Handed Weapon — The trade-off for Warriors
The Warrior faces a fundamental decision: one-handed sword with shield or two-handed weapon without shield? Both options have their merit, but for different playstyles:
One-Handed + Shield (Tank Build)
- Significantly more defence through shield bonus
- Block chance substantially reduces incoming damage
- Ideal for group dungeons as a tank
- Less damage than two-handed build
- Slower when farming monsters
Two-Handed Weapon (DPS Build)
- Significantly higher attack value and damage
- More effective solo farming and levelling
- No shield protection — requires better positioning awareness
- Usually deployed as a DPS dealer in groups
- Less suitable for the tank role in difficult dungeons
Enhancing Shields
The plus system does not apply to shields. Shields cannot be improved with either ores or spirit stones — they therefore always retain their base values. The recommendation is therefore: choose a shield with the right bonuses for your build from the start, as subsequent improvements are not possible.
