The Transformation System — Metin2's Unique Mechanic

Among all of Metin2's systems, the Transformation System is one of the most visually impressive. Using special transformation masks, the player can temporarily take on the form of a monster — and in doing so not only change their appearance, but also gain real combat bonuses. The system has existed for many years and is regarded by the community as one of the game's iconic features.

The Lycan is the most extreme expression of transformation — it is a standalone class that can permanently switch between human and werewolf form. The general transformation system using masks, however, is open to all classes and provides an additional tactical layer.

How Does Transformation Work?

The basic principle is straightforward: you use a transformation mask from your inventory, your character takes on the form of the corresponding monster, and for a limited duration the bonuses of that transformation apply. Once the timer expires, the character automatically reverts to their normal form.

Step by Step

  1. Have a transformation mask in your inventory (drop, marketplace, or events)
  2. Double-click the mask to activate the transformation
  3. Your character takes on the monster's appearance and bonuses
  4. Combat skills remain usable — the transformation changes only your bonuses, not your playstyle
  5. Automatic reversion to normal form once the timer runs out

Important: while transformed, no further transformation masks can be activated. The cooldown after a transformation ends is brief, so experienced players can chain transformations in rapid succession if they have sufficient masks in stock.

Transformation Forms and Their Bonuses

Bonuses vary considerably depending on the mask type. Here is an overview of the most important categories:

Mask TypeTypical BonusesEspecially Good For
Warrior monsters (e.g. Mountain Spirit)+Physical Attack, +HPBody Warrior, Lycan
Magic monsters (e.g. Ghosts)+Magic Attack, +ManaSura, Shaman
Fast monsters (e.g. Wolves)+Movement Speed, +Attack SpeedNinja, Lycan
Tank monsters (e.g. Stone Giants)+Armour, +ResistancesMental Warrior, PvP Tank
Event masks (seasonal)Variable, often multiple combined bonusesDepends on event design

The most powerful transformation masks are naturally the rarest. Masks from high-end dungeons or limited events can combine multiple bonuses — a combination of increased attack AND movement speed is ideal for many classes.

How to Obtain Transformation Masks

Monster Drops

Certain monsters in the open world drop their own transformation mask. The drop chance is low, but by farming the right monster specifically you can obtain the desired mask variant. Forum posts and community guides list the exact drop locations — the constant updates from an active community are invaluable here.

Dungeon Drops

Dungeons such as Tigerghost, Nemere, and Meley drop stronger mask variants. Defeating the end-boss monsters has a chance of dropping monster masks that at least temporarily replicate the strength of those bosses.

Events

Seasonal events such as Halloween or special player events frequently offer exclusive transformation masks. These are only available for a limited time, after which they can only be obtained via the marketplace — and are priced accordingly.

Item Shop

Selected premium masks are available in the Item Shop (Nesne Market), often combining multiple bonuses and offering a longer transformation duration. These are optional additions — players who prefer not to spend real money can still get a long way with dropped masks.

Transformation in PvP

In guild warfare and open PvP, experienced players use transformations strategically. Activating a tank transformation just before a critical engagement grants additional resistances; a speed transformation allows you to escape an attack or close the gap on an opponent.

Particularly noteworthy: hostile players can see an opponent's transformation, but the character name remains visible. This means a transformation is not a disguise — it is an offensive or defensive boost, not camouflage.

In organised Guild War battles, experienced guilds co-ordinate transformation timing: tanks transform together for synchronised protection phases, damage dealers for co-ordinated burst windows.

The Lycan — Permanent Transformation as a Class Feature

The Lycan holds a special position. This class is designed as a werewolf and can switch between human form and werewolf form at any time. In werewolf form, the entire combat behaviour changes: different animations, different skill effects, and enhanced physical stats.

The Lycan is therefore the most extreme example of the transformation principle in Metin2 — it embodies transformation as a core mechanic rather than a temporary buff. Players who love the concept of transformation as a gameplay element will find its most committed realisation in the Lycan.
