Why Espionage is Crucial in OGame

In OGame, information determines victory or defeat. Anyone who attacks without spying first risks launching their assault against a fleet or defence they didn't expect. The espionage system isn't an optional feature — it's the foundation of every successful attack strategy.

The browser game OGame has existed since 2002, and the espionage system was central from the beginning. Over the years it has been refined: today, espionage technology differences, probe numbers and the sensor phalanx on the moon are the key variables in a tactically sophisticated reconnaissance system that requires no installation — everything runs directly in the browser.

Those who understand the espionage system can deliberately select targets, calculate risks and efficiently loot resources. Those who ignore it lose ships to surprising counter-fleets or hidden defence installations.

Spy Probes — Foundation of Reconnaissance

What are Spy Probes?

Spy probes are the smallest and fastest ships in OGame. They cost only 1,000 crystal per unit and can be built in seconds. Their only function is spying on opponents and planets — in combat they are completely useless and are destroyed immediately.

How Many Probes Do I Need?

The number of probes required depends on the difference between your espionage technology and your opponent's:

Espionage Technology AdvantageRequired ProbesVisible Information
+2 levels above opponent1 probeResources, fleets, defence
Same as opponent5–10 probesResources + fleets completely
−2 levels below opponent20+ probesOften only resources visible

As a rule of thumb: always keep your espionage technology at a high level. Low espionage technology means you waste more probes and still get incomplete reports.

Reading the Espionage Report

Resources

Resources (metal, crystal, deuterium) are always visible in the report — regardless of espionage technology. They show you whether an attack is worthwhile. Very high resource amounts on a planet are a clear signal that the player has been offline for a long time or hasn't collected their production.

Fleets

Fleets are the most critical element in the report. If a strong fleet is stationed on a planet, an attack could end catastrophically. Fleets only become visible when you send enough probes or have a sufficient espionage technology advantage. Pay particular attention to recyclers (sign of active fleeters) and cargo ships (sign of resource players).

Defence

The opponent's defence installations are also visible in the report. Plasma cannons and shield domes indicate that a planet is heavily fortified — an attack with bombers or a massive fleet would be necessary. Light defence like rocket launchers can be easily overcome with a normal attack fleet.

Research

With very high espionage technology, the opponent's research levels can also be viewed. This gives clues about the strength of their ships (weapons technology, shield technology, armour technology) and helps with combat simulator calculations.

Counter-Espionage — Protecting Your Own Fleet

Intercepting Probes

When an opponent spies on you, you see an activity indicator on the affected planet. You also receive a report about the incoming probes. The more espionage technology you have, the more of the opponent's probes are intercepted and destroyed during their attempt — this costs them resources and gives you time.

Fleet in Fleetsave

The most effective counter-espionage is fleetsaving: a fleet that's on a mission isn't visible via spy probe. Only the sensor phalanx can detect ongoing fleet movements. Those who regularly fleetsave their fleet deprive attackers of the most important information.

Activity Indicator

When someone is active on a planet (or a fleet arrives), a 15-minute activity indicator is set there. Experienced players can tell from this when you were active. Those who think strategically send their fleetsave so that the activity indicator doesn't inform the attacker about the return flight point.

Sensor Phalanx — The Most Powerful Reconnaissance Tool

The sensor phalanx is a moon building and surpasses spy probes in its capability: it shows fleet movements in neighbouring systems in real-time without needing to send probes. The range depends on the construction level — the Discoverer class receives a significant bonus here.

Each phalanx use costs deuterium. Since the phalanx reveals active fleets, it's the preferred tool of experienced fleeters: they search for ships that are on their way back to a planet, then attack the planet before the fleet returns — a classic "ninja" scenario.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does espionage work in OGame?

You send spy probes to a target planet. The probes create a report about resources, fleets and defence — the more probes and the higher your espionage technology, the more complete the report.

What does an espionage report show?

Resources are always visible. Fleets and defence become visible when you send enough probes or have an espionage technology advantage over your opponent.

What is the sensor phalanx?

The sensor phalanx is a moon building that displays active fleet movements in neighbouring systems — without probes. It's the most powerful reconnaissance tool in OGame and essential for advanced fleeters.
