What is a moon in OGame?

A moon is a natural satellite that can form after a battle in a planet's orbit. It is not a guaranteed object — its creation depends on the size of the debris field and on luck of the dice. Once created, the moon is a permanent game resource: It cannot be lost, except if an enemy Death Star destroys it deliberately.

The strategic value of the moon lies in its exclusive buildings. Sensor Phalanx and Jump Gate are mechanics that only exist on moons — and they fundamentally define the playing style of advanced OGame players.

Moon Chance and Moon Size

The moon chance depends on the amount of resources in the debris field after a battle. The larger the debris field, the higher the moon chance — with a hard upper limit of 20%.

Debris Field (Resources)Moon Chance
100,000~1%
500,000~2%
1,000,000~4%
2,500,000~10%
5,000,000+20% (Maximum)

Moon Size Determines Available Fields

The size of the created moon is random and lies between 1 and 8,188 kilometres. Larger moons have more building fields. With Moon Base research, additional fields can be unlocked. Anyone building on their moon hopes for a large moon — small moons (under 3,000 km) may provide too little space for extensive development.

Moon Buildings in Detail

Sensor Phalanx

The Sensor Phalanx is the most powerful building on the moon. It allows you to spy on fleet movements in a specific solar system — without sending espionage probes. The higher the phalanx level, the more solar systems to the left and right of your moon you can observe.

For fleeters, the Sensor Phalanx is indispensable: It allows detection of attacking fleets, discovery of opponents' fleetsaves and identification of profitable attack targets. Discoverers get additional phalanx range through their class.

Jump Gate

The Jump Gate enables instant, free transport of fleets between two of your own moons. Deuterium costs are eliminated. The only disadvantage: After a jump there is a cooldown period before the gate can be used again — and both moons need a Jump Gate.

Strategically, the Jump Gate is enormously valuable: Fleets can be repositioned within seconds, without opponents having advance warning through flight times. For fleeters in alliances or during coordinated attacks (ACS) it is a decisive tactical advantage.

Moon Base

The Moon Base is not a tactical unit — it increases the number of building fields on the moon. Each level provides 3 additional fields. For moons with few natural fields, the Moon Base is necessary to be able to construct all important buildings.

Shipyard and Storage

Moon shipyards and storage work identically to planetary counterparts. Some players build a shipyard on the moon for quick ship construction in a favourable position — or use moon storage as a resource buffer.

Why is the moon so important?

The moon fundamentally changes the game. Without a moon you are visible in planetary orbit — your fleets and resources can be observed by an opponent's Sensor Phalanx. With a moon you have natural camouflage: Fleets you station on the moon no longer appear in the planetary overview.

This invisibility is central to the fleetsave mechanic of the advanced game level. Instead of sending the fleet on an hours-long mission, you can park it on the moon — if the opponent doesn't have their own phalanx on your moon.

Getting Your First Moon

For new players, moon shooting — a deliberate creation of a debris field with moon chance — is the classic method. Two friendly players coordinate a mock attack: The attacker sends cheap ships, which the defender destroys, to create a debris field.

Alternatively, moons arise naturally through real battles. Anyone involved in conflicts or defending against attacks has regular chances for moon creation — without extra effort.
