Defence in OGame — Basic Principles

In OGame, any planet can be attacked. The question isn't if, but when — and how much the attacker will have to pay for it. Defensive structures are stationary units that protect a planet without requiring fleetsave management. They are the passive defensive line that is especially indispensable when you can't always be online.

The biggest advantage of defence over a protective fleet is regeneration: 70% of all destroyed defensive structures are automatically restored after combat. Anyone who builds strong defence only needs to replace 30% of losses in an emergency — a significant economic advantage over losing an entire protective fleet.

Defence is no substitute for fleetsave — but an indispensable deterrent for any player who regularly leaves their planet unattended. The browser game OGame has offered a sophisticated system here since 2002 that can be played in the browser and requires no installation.

All Defensive Structures Overview

Small Shield Dome10,000 / 10,000Protects all structures with shield points
Large Shield Dome50,000 / 50,000Massive shield, essential from mid-game

Building Order — What to Build First?

Early Phase: Deterrent Against Beginners

In the early phase, Rocket Launchers and Light Lasers suffice as initial deterrents. They cost little and make your planet unattractive to other beginners. However, having sufficient resources for research and fleet building is more important than extensive defence in this phase.

Mid-Game: Mass Deployment and Shield Domes

From mid-game onwards, defence should be systematically expanded. The Small Shield Dome is the first important building block: it protects all other structures with a shared shield pool and significantly increases the survivability of the entire defence. This is followed by Gauss Cannons as anti-battleship structures and a Large Shield Dome.

Endgame: Plasma Turrets and Complete Coverage

In the endgame, Plasma Turrets are the core structure of any serious defence. They cause the highest damage of all structures and make an attack on a well-fortified planet extremely costly. A planet with 50+ Plasma Turrets, Shield Domes and Gauss Cannons is simply not profitable for most fleeters to attack.

Defence vs. Fleetsave — Which is Better?

This question has occupied OGame players since 2002. The short answer: both together is optimal, but if you have to choose, it depends on your playing style.

  • Fleetsave protects your fleet absolutely — but only if you do it in time. Anyone who goes offline without activating fleetsave risks everything.
  • Defence protects resources passively — without you having to act actively. Ideal for casual players.
  • Resource bunkers (Metal Storage, Crystal Storage, Deuterium Tank) protect part of the resources additionally, independent of defence.

For miner players (Collector class), strong defence is essential. For active fleeters, fleetsave is more important, but they too build basic defence against opportunistic attacks during shorter offline phases.

Anti-Ballistic Missiles Against Interplanetary Missiles

A special aspect of defence is the missile duel: attackers can fire Interplanetary Missiles at defensive structures without sending a fleet. Anti-Ballistic Missiles neutralise these attacks in a 1:1 ratio. Anyone who has built strong defence should also store sufficient Anti-Ballistic Missiles in the missile silo — otherwise an attacker can gradually wear down the defence with Interplanetary Missiles before attacking with the fleet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is defence worth it in OGame?

Yes, especially for players who aren't active daily. Defence significantly increases the effort for attackers and regenerates 70% automatically after an attack. It's no substitute for fleetsave, but an indispensable safety net.

What is the strongest defensive structure?

The Plasma Turret causes the highest damage. In combination with Large Shield Dome and Gauss Cannons, it creates the most effective basic defence for mid and endgame.

Is defence repaired after an attack?

Yes — 70% of destroyed structures are automatically restored. Only 30% are permanently lost, making defence economical long-term.
