Space War with Real Consequences
In OGame, war isn't abstract — it has real consequences. If your fleet loses a battle, the ships are destroyed. If an attacker raids your planet, the resources are gone. This reality makes every conflict meaningful and every victory satisfying.
Since 2002, OGame has delivered space warfare that takes place on both individual and alliance levels — directly in your browser, no download required, free to play.
Understanding the Combat System
How Battles Work
OGame battles are turn-based and calculated automatically. Attackers and defenders fire simultaneously at enemy units. Ship selection order is random, but rapidfire bonuses often decide the battle:
- Light Fighter vs Light Fighter: Mass battles where numbers count
- Cruiser vs Light Fighter: Rapidfire — cruisers fire multiple times per round
- Battleship vs Small Cargo: Clear dominance of the combat class
- Destroyer vs Battleship: Destroyer's rapidfire makes it a battleship killer
Key Ship Classes in War
| Ship | Strength | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| Light Fighter | Mass and speed | Cannon fodder, distraction |
| Heavy Fighter | Stronger than LF, cheaper than cruiser | Medium battles |
| Cruiser | Rapidfire vs LF (×6) | Anti-Light Fighter |
| Battleship | High shield and attack | Backbone of combat fleet |
| Battlecruiser | Rapidfire vs Cruiser | Anti-Cruiser, speed |
| Bomber | Rapidfire vs defence | Breaking planetary defences |
| Destroyer | Rapidfire vs Battleship | Anti-Capital Ship |
| Reaper | Rapidfire vs everything, collects debris | Multirole combat+harvest |
| Death Star | Strongest weapon, can destroy moons | Ultimate power demonstration |
Building Defences
Those not planning attacks still need to defend. Planetary defence deters attackers and greatly increases the cost of an attack:
- Rocket Launcher: Cheap mass defence, excellent as first line
- Gauss Cannon: High attack value, good against heavy ships
- Plasma Turret: Strongest stationary weapon, destroys even battleships
- Shield Domes: Small and large variants absorb hits
- Anti-Ballistic Missiles: Defence against interplanetary missiles
Defence is restored to 70% after a battle — an important economic advantage over the loss of ships.
Interplanetary War: Missile Attacks
Besides fleet battles, there's another aspect of war: interplanetary missiles. These launch from your missile silo and hit enemy defensive installations without risking a fleet. The opponent can respond with anti-ballistic missiles.
Missile attacks often prepare for a major fleet assault — defences are weakened, then the fleet attacks. Classic combined warfare.
Fleetsave: The Most Important War Skill
The paradox of OGame: The most important war skill isn't attacking, but defending whilst inactive. Fleetsave — the art of safely sending your fleet on missions — saves more resources than any weapon.
Those who don't master fleetsave eventually lose their entire fleet to an attacker who finds the optimal attack window. Those who master fleetsave remain capable of action even after defeats and rebuild quickly.
Alliance Wars: The Grand Scale
The greatest conflicts in OGame take place at alliance level. Wars between large alliances can last weeks, involve hundreds of players and shape the character of entire universes. ACS coordination, espionage, diplomacy — it's war in full strategic scope.
