OGame: The Browser Empire Building Game in Space
There are many space empire building games — but most require a download, high system requirements or a monthly subscription. OGame is different. As one of the oldest and most successful browser strategy games, it has been running completely in the browser since 2002, free and without any installation.
The gameplay combines classic empire building mechanics with real multiplayer: You start with an empty planet, build an economy, research technologies, colonise new worlds and build a space fleet for exploration and combat. All this happens in a persistent universe with thousands of other players.
What you build in OGame
OGame is surprisingly complex in its building depth. The various buildings and units interlock and require a well-thought-out construction sequence:
Planetary Buildings
| Building | Function |
|---|---|
| Metal Mine | Produces metal, the basic resource |
| Crystal Mine | Produces crystal for research and ships |
| Deuterium Synthesizer | Produces fleet fuel and research resource |
| Solar Plant | Generates energy for mine operation |
| Fusion Reactor | Highly efficient energy source for advanced players |
| Robotics Factory | Reduces build times of all buildings |
| Nanite Factory | Drastic reduction of all build times (endgame) |
| Shipyard | Builds ships and defence structures |
| Research Lab | Enables technology research |
Expansion: Colonies and Moon
A single planet isn't enough eventually. With astrophysics research, you can establish colonies on other planets in your solar system or other galaxies. Each colony produces its own resources and can be developed independently. Up to eight colonies are possible.
When enough ships are destroyed in an orbital battle, a debris field is created — and from this, with a certain probability, a moon. Moons are safe retreats with special buildings such as the sensor phalanx and jump gate.
Research: Technological Progress
Besides building expansion, research is the second major construction area. Over 20 technologies in various fields await research:
- Propulsion Technologies: Combustion Drive, Impulse Drive, Hyperspace Drive — each ship uses one of these drives
- Combat Technologies: Weapons Technology, Shielding Technology, Armour Technology increase combat power
- Economic Technologies: Energy Technology, Plasma Technology (resource bonus), Computer Technology (more fleet slots)
- Expansion Technologies: Astrophysics for more colonies, Espionage Technology for better reconnaissance
- Graviton Research: The milestone — 300,000 energy for the Death Star
Browser Advantage: Play when and where you want
The biggest advantage of OGame over client-based space games is complete browser compatibility. No download, no updates you have to wait for, no system requirements that could overwhelm your PC.
In practice, this means:
- Quick check at the office between two meetings: Collect resources, start construction
- Evenings on laptop: Deep strategic planning, attacks, alliance communication
- On the go via smartphone: OGame Mobile App or mobile browser version
- Whilst travelling or on holiday: Any browser with internet connection is sufficient
OGame runs even when you're offline: Mines continue producing, research gets completed, fleets return — you don't have to be constantly online to achieve progress.
Community and Alliance
OGame is not a single-player experience. Alliances are the social backbone of the game: Players band together, support each other and conduct coordinated wars against other alliances. The British OGame communities are amongst the most active browser game communities in the English-speaking world.
Events such as the regular Titan Clash bring additional alliance dynamics and reward coordinated play with exclusive prizes and titles.
