From Single Planet to Galactic Empire
Anyone looking for a settler building game in the browser that costs nothing and requires no installation will sooner or later come across OGame. The principle is classic yet unique: You start on a single planet, build it up, and expand your realm with each new colony to other worlds in different solar systems and galaxies.
OGame has been active since 2002 and has defined the concept of browser-based space settler gaming. No game combines the depth of colonising with strategic building planning so consistently — and all completely free and without client download.
How Colonisation Works in OGame
Step 1: Build up the home planet
Every game begins on the home planet. Here you build the basic structure: Metal mine, crystal mine, deuterium synthesizer provide resources. The solar power plant supplies energy. The robotics factory speeds up construction. The research lab opens the path to new technologies. Those who have their home planet well-established find it easier to finance all further steps.
Step 2: Research Astrophysics
The key technology for every settler in OGame is Astrophysics research. With each level of this research, you gain the ability to colonise another planet. You can play with up to 9 planets — plus an additional slot for the Explorer class. Each new planet is its own economic unit that you can fully build and specialise.
Step 3: Build and deploy colony ship
Once Astrophysics is sufficiently researched, you build a colony ship in the shipyard and send it to a free planet slot in any galaxy. The position of the planet influences its size and thus the maximum number of building fields — an initial strategic decision when settling.
Step 4: Discover moons
Besides planets, there are moons — special celestial bodies that only arise through combat. When a large debris field is created in an orbit, there's a moon chance. Moons offer unique buildings like the sensor phalanx (spy on enemy fleets) and the jump gate (instant transport between moons). A moon isn't automatic but a prestige object with strategic value.
Develop Planets Strategically
Not all planets need to be built the same way. Many experienced players specialise their colonies: One planet as a pure mining colony with maximised resource production, another as a shipyard colony with high ship production rate, a third as an attack position near a strategically important solar system.
This specialisation is one of the most profound aspects of the OGame building system. There's no optimal universal solution — every universe, every constellation and every play style requires individual decisions.
| Planet Type | Focus | Main Buildings |
|---|---|---|
| Mining Colony | Resource Production | Metal mine, Crystal mine, Deuterium synthesizer |
| Shipyard Colony | Ship Construction | Shipyard, Robotics factory, Nanite factory |
| Research Colony | Research | Research lab (high), Intergalactic research network |
| Defence Colony | Protection | Missile silo, Shield domes, Plasma turrets |
Free in Browser — No Settler Game Could Be Simpler
The biggest advantage of OGame over other settler building games: It needs nothing but a browser. No download, no installation, no system requirements. You open the page, register in two minutes and start immediately. This applies on desktop as well as on tablet or smartphone via the OGame mobile app.
The game is completely free-to-play. Dark Matter as optional premium currency can be used for officers or accelerations, but isn't a mandatory component of successful gameplay. Many of the most experienced players in German universes have been playing for years without significant expenses.
