Conquering galaxies in the browser — what that means
The promise "conquer galaxy" sounds grand — and in OGame it truly is. The universe consists of multiple galaxies, each with hundreds of solar systems and thousands of habitable planet positions. Each of these positions can be claimed by a player.
As a new player, you begin with a single planet. With the right strategy — and enough ambition — you can found colonies in distant galaxies, secure strategically advantageous positions, and together with your alliance dominate entire galaxy sectors.
How expansion works in OGame
1. Astrophysics Research
Every new colony requires higher Astrophysics research. This technology is the key to galactic expansion — each level allows one more colony and provides more expedition slots for exploring the unknown.
2. Building Colony Ships
The Colony Ship transports your settlers to a new planet. Once arrived, a new colony emerges with its own development potential. Planet size (fields) determines how much you can build on it — an important factor when choosing positions.
3. Strategic Positioning
Not every planet position is equally good:
- Slot 1-3: Good for Crystal production (fewer temperature fluctuations)
- Slot 4-6: Balanced production, often preferred
- Slot 7-9: Ideal for Metal, less Crystal
- Slot 10-15: Very low temperatures, optimal for Deuterium
Those who colonise strategically spread their planets for maximum total production.
4. Moons as Power Bases
Moons form randomly after battles in orbit — and they're strategically worth their weight in gold. On a moon, a Jump Gate can be built: a kind of instant transport for fleets between two jump gates without travel time. Those who control moons in strategic positions control the galaxy's logistics.
The Sensor Phalanx on moons allows you to observe foreign fleet movements in certain solar systems — a powerful reconnaissance tool against opponents.
Expeditions: Exploring the galaxy
Besides colonisation, there's another way to develop the galaxy: expeditions. You send a fleet into the unknown and hope for discoveries:
- Resources (Metal, Crystal, Deuterium)
- Ships — sometimes entire fleets of old wrecks
- Dark Matter as a rare lucky find
- Pirates or alien fleets as challenges
The Explorer class receives massive expedition bonuses and can make galaxy exploration a profitable play style.
Alliance dominance: Controlling galaxies together
The greatest scale of galactic control isn't achieved alone, but with a well-organised alliance. Strong alliances in OGame:
- Coordinate colonisations in strategically important galaxies
- Jointly defend territories against rival alliances
- Conduct coordinated ACS attacks on intruders
- Negotiate pact boundaries with other alliances
In established universes, galaxies are often divided amongst dominant alliances — a political balance that can be shattered by war at any moment.
Browser advantage: Keep the galaxy in sight everywhere
OGame runs entirely in the browser — no client, no download, no installation. This means: you always have access to your galactic empire. Quickly log in, check a colony, redirect a fleet — done in 5 minutes, wherever you are.
For a multiplayer strategy game where timing matters, this flexibility is a real advantage: you react to threats and opportunities faster than client-bound players.
