Building Games with PvP — What Makes Them Special?
Most browser building games are either pure economic simulations without real conflict or action games without strategic depth. A building game that combines real PvP with deep resource management is rare. OGame does exactly that — for over 23 years.
In OGame you build a galactic empire: mines produce resources, research laboratories unlock new technologies, shipyards build warships. But everything you build exists in a galaxy with thousands of other real players — and each of them can attack you, or you them.
The Building: Foundation of Every Successful Empire
OGame begins with an empty planet and a simple goal: produce resources, grow faster than the competition.
Resource Production
Metal mine, crystal mine and deuterium synthesiser are the foundation. The higher the development level, the more resources flow — but also the more energy is required. Solar plant and fusion reactor keep the balance in equilibrium.
Research as Strategic Multiplier
The research lab unlocks over 20 technologies: better drives for faster fleets, weapons technology for stronger attacks, astrophysics for additional colonies. Those who optimise the research sequence grow significantly faster than competitors.
Colonies and Galactic Expansion
With astrophysics research and colony ships you settle new planets in other galaxies. Each colony produces resources and can serve as an outpost for attacks or defence.
The PvP: Where Strategy Becomes a Real Challenge
Building is only one half of OGame. The other half is real player combat — and this is significantly more complex than in typical browser games.
Attacks and Resource Raiding
Every player can attack other players and steal their resources. Recyclers collect the resulting debris field. Successful raids require reconnaissance through spy probes, fleet planning and precise timing.
The Alliance Combat System (ACS)
Multiple players can combine their fleets for a joint attack. The ACS enables coordinated large-scale attacks on strong opponents — an element that requires real teamwork and communication within the alliance.
Building Defence
Rocket launchers, Gauss cannons, plasma turrets and shield domes protect the home planet. A well-developed defence deters attackers — but the clever player knows: fleetsave is the best protection for the valuable fleet.
Fleetsave: The Strategic Core
Anyone who goes offline without securing their fleet risks everything. Fleetsave — the art of sending your own fleet on a long mission so it remains untouchable during absence — is the central PvP mechanic in OGame. No other browser building game has a comparably deep system for fleet security.
Browser Advantage: PvP Without Download
Other building games with PvP require a client download, a gaming PC or a mobile app. OGame runs entirely in the browser — on any device, anytime:
- Check an attack on the PC at the office
- Manage the fleet on the smartphone
- Plan the building queue on the tablet
No download, no installation, no system requirements except a browser and internet connection.
Player Classes for Different PvP Styles
OGame offers three classes that support different playstyles:
- General: Bonus on fleet speed and combat strength — the choice for active raiders and PvP players
- Collector: Bonus on resource production — ideal foundation for a strong economic base
- Discoverer: Bonus on expeditions and planet slots — for players who want to gain resources through exploration rather than attack
