In Metin2, skills are the special abilities of your character. From Level 5 onwards, you choose your specialisation and immediately receive 4 skill points. For each additional level, you gain exactly 1 more point. You distribute these points across six class-specific skills – your build depends on how you allocate these points. The skill system is the strategic heart of the game and determines your playstyle, damage output and survivability.
How Skill Points Work
The quest "The Training" at Level 5 is your starting point: you commit to a specialisation and receive your first four points. From then on, the rule is simple – one level, one point. You can distribute your points at any time in the skill window on your skills.
Once you have assigned at least one point to a skill, you can use it actively. To do this, drag it onto the hotkey bar at the bottom of your screen. Keys 1–4 or F1–F4 activate them during combat. Alternatively, right-click directly on the skill in the skill window. Some skills can also be assigned to left or right mouse button.
Skills consume mana points when used. How much mana is consumed depends on the skill itself and its current level. After use, there is a cooldown period, which varies by skill. The higher the skill level, the more powerful the effect – and certain items can further enhance the effect.
The Skill Window at a Glance
The skill window is divided into several areas that you should be familiar with:
- Skills: Class-specific skills and mount skills.
- Skill Points: Shows your current available skill points.
- Specialisation Skills: Each of the five classes has two specialisations with six skills each – you choose one at Level 5.
- Counter and Boost Skills: Once you have mastered a counter skill, you unlock a boost skill.
- Combo: Allows you to extend your combo chain by up to two additional hits.
- Languages: Kingdom-specific language skills – at master rank M1 you understand players of that kingdom.
- Other Skills: Additional passive or support abilities.
- Riding: Shows your current mount level.
Class Skills: Body Warrior and Mental Warrior as Examples
Each of the five classes has two specialisations with different playstyles. As a concrete example, the two warrior specialisations show how different the skills of a single class can be:
| Specialisation | Skill | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Body Warrior | Sword Aura | Attack power increases based on level and STR skill allocation |
| Body Warrior | Combat Frenzy | Movement & attack speed increase; defence decreases at grandmaster level |
| Body Warrior | Three-Way Cut | Triple weapon strike in rapid succession |
| Body Warrior | Sword Whirlwind | Spins with the weapon, creates strong area damage |
| Body Warrior | Rush | Stun attack with temporarily extremely increased movement speed and damage |
| Body Warrior | Will to Live | Frontal attack |
| Body Warrior | Earthquake | Frontal attack |
| Mental Warrior | Strong Body | Defence increases, movement speed decreases; no knockdown at grandmaster level |
| Mental Warrior | Sword Strike | Stun with area damage |
| Mental Warrior | Stomp | Stun chance with area damage |
| Mental Warrior | Breakthrough | Area damage |
| Mental Warrior | Heavy Blow | Area damage |
The Body Warrior focuses on offensive mobility and single-hit burst, whilst the Mental Warrior specialises in defence and area control. This principle applies to all five classes: each specialisation has its own profile of damage, control and utility.
Skill Books and Training Cycle
Skills cannot be levelled indefinitely quickly. You can read all skill books in parallel, but there is a 24-hour cycle per book. If you try to read too early, the game will explain with an appropriate message why you still need to wait.
If you want to bypass the waiting time, you can use an Exorcism Scroll. This resets the cooldown and allows you to read immediately.
Reading the books advances your skills through various ranks – from Novice through Master to Grandmaster. From Master rank M2 onwards, reading gives you additional skill points, which are lost again when you reset.
Resetting Skills: When and How
If you've distributed your points incorrectly or want to change specialisations, you can reset your skills. This is possible with the Old Woman in the game – but only up to and including Level 30 for a Yang fee.
| Level | Cost in Yang |
|---|---|
| 5 | 20,000 Yang |
| 6 | 22,000 Yang |
| 7 | 24,000 Yang |
| 10 | 30,000 Yang |
| 20 | 50,000 Yang |
| 30 | 70,000 Yang |
The price starts at 20,000 Yang at Level 5 and increases by 2,000 Yang for each additional level. When you reset, you get all distributed points back – however, you lose the points you gained through master levels (M2 to M10) and grandmaster levels.
From Level 31 onwards, reset with the Old Woman is no longer possible. You then need a Skill Redistribution Document (also: skill reset item), which you can obtain through the shop system or as a drop.
What Does "Overkilled" Mean and How Do You Fix It?
Overkilled means: you have assigned more than 17 skill points to a single skill. This is a common mistake for beginners because the system doesn't automatically block it. The consequence: the skill won't advance correctly to the next rank.
The critical threshold is at 17 points – here the skill should advance to master rank. However, this is not guaranteed and can require multiple attempts. If it doesn't work with the Old Woman, you can reset again immediately without losing any points – the retry costs no additional points.
Those already over Level 30 and overkilled should use a Skill Reset Item.
Tips for Smart Skill Distribution
- Choose specialisation early: The quest "The Training" at Level 5 gives you four points – spend them wisely, as a reset costs Yang.
- Maximum 17 points per skill: More provides nothing except problems with rank advancement. Distribute spare points to other skills.
- Read skill books daily: The 24-hour cycle means: those who log in and read daily level their skills much faster than those who play sporadically.
- Use Exorcism Scrolls strategically: During levelling sprints or events, it's worth bypassing cooldowns.
- Keep combo in mind early: The combo function extends your combo chain and should be considered in your build concept.
- Counter before boost skill: You unlock the boost skill only after mastering the counter skill – plan accordingly.
