What is a Skill Book in Metin2?
A skill book is a consumable item you need to boost the active and passive abilities of your class beyond the base level. Without skill books, your skills stay at a low level – you can invest skill points, but that alone isn't enough for higher skill levels. The book is removed from your inventory when you attempt to read it, regardless of whether the attempt was successful or not. This system applies to all playable classes: Warrior, Ninja, Sura, Shaman and Lycan.
Skill Levels Overview
Metin2 distinguishes several skill levels. You reach regular levels (1–20) by investing skill points. To go beyond level 20 and reach Master and Grand Master levels, you need skill books. The following level designations are relevant in the game:
| Level | Designation | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| 1–19 | Normal | Invest skill points |
| 20 (P) | Perfect | All skill points in the skill |
| M1–M10 | Master | Read skill books (skill at P) |
| G1–G10 | Grand Master | Read skill books (skill at M10) |
| P (Grand Master) | Perfect Grand Master | Read skill books (skill at G10) |
How Do Skill Books Work?
You read skill books directly from your inventory. You right-click the book and confirm the reading attempt. The learning attempt can be successful or fail – in both cases, the book is consumed. This means: Plan enough books, especially for the higher Master and Grand Master levels, as success rates may decrease.
Important rules when reading:
- Your skill must be at level P (Perfect, i.e. level 20) before you can start with Master books.
- Books for the Master range differ from books for the Grand Master range – pay attention to the correct type when purchasing.
- The book disappears from your inventory after each attempt, whether successful or not.
- You can acquire skill books through player-to-player trading or the official shop.
The 9th Skill – Earthquake and the Special Skill Book
Each class has a so-called 9th skill in addition to regular abilities, also known as the "Earthquake" skill in the wiki (this skill has a different name depending on the class). This skill is not unlocked via normal skill points, but requires a special skill book that differs from the standard skill book.
You can only activate and boost the 9th skill once you have the matching special skill book in your inventory and meet the requirements. This special book is usually rarer and harder to obtain than normal skill books. It is consumed in the same way by reading.
Dragon Shaman – Which Skills to Prioritise?
As a Dragon Shaman (Shaman with dragon path), you face the decision of which skills to bring to Master and Grand Master level first with skill books. Here is a clear prioritisation recommendation based on wiki information:
| Skill | Type | Recommendation | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dragon's Aid | Passive / Defensive | High Priority | Increases crit chance; crit damage = double damage – worth it early |
| Dragon's Roar | Offensive | High Priority PvM | Area damage with high range, almost always hits – core PvM skill |
| Dragon Shot | Offensive | Medium Priority | Linear area damage, short load time – good complement to Dragon's Roar |
| Flying Talisman | Offensive | PvP Focus | Shortest cooldown, against 1–2 enemies – only relevant if you play PvP |
| Blessing | Defensive | Situational | Reduces physical damage – useful against physical enemies |
| Reflect | Defensive | Low Priority | Chance to reflect damage (physical only) – effect is situation-dependent |
Note on Blessing: Blessing reduces physical damage by the specified percentage, but has no effect on magical damage. If you farm in areas with many magic enemies, a high-level blessing offers little benefit. Prioritise Dragon's Aid and Dragon's Roar instead.
Where Do You Get Skill Books?
You can obtain skill books in various ways:
- Drops from monsters and metins: Skill books drop from metinstones and certain monsters. Higher-level areas provide more frequent drops of books for higher levels.
- Player-to-player trading: Other players sell skill books in shops or through direct trading. Prices vary depending on server and demand.
- Official shop / Events: Gameforge offers skill books occasionally through the paid shop or event rewards.
- Dungeons and bosses: Certain dungeon bosses and world bosses drop skill books as rewards.
Common Mistakes in Skill Book Farming
Many players – especially newcomers – make these avoidable mistakes:
- Reading books on the wrong skill: Always check which skill the book is for. A Master book for Dragon's Roar cannot be used for Dragon Shot.
- Skill not yet at P: The book disappears anyway if your skill is not yet at level 20 (P) and you try to read a Master book. Level your skill completely first!
- Not enough books planned: Always budget for more books than theoretically needed. Failures happen, especially at higher Master/Grand Master levels.
- Wrong book type purchased: Master books and Grand Master books are different. Only buy what you can currently use.
Frequently Asked Questions about Skill Books in Metin2
What happens if reading a skill book fails?
The skill book is removed from your inventory without your skill gaining a level. You have gained nothing, but the book is lost. Therefore, always plan reserve books.
From which skill level do I need a skill book?
Skill books are required from level P (Perfect, i.e. level 20) to progress into the Master range (M1–M10). For normal levels 1–19, skill points are sufficient.
Can I use a skill book for all classes?
No. Skill books are class-specific and sometimes even skill-specific. A book for the Dragon Shaman skill Dragon's Roar cannot be used by a Warrior.
What is the 9th skill and how do I unlock it?
The 9th skill is a special ability of each class (e.g. known as "Earthquake"), which requires its own special skill book. Normal skill points are not enough to activate it.
Which skill is worth mastering first as a Dragon Shaman?
Dragon's Aid has high priority because it increases crit chance and critical hits deal double damage. In PvM, Dragon's Roar is also very valuable for its area damage.
Does Blessing also reduce magical damage?
No. Blessing reduces exclusively physical (physical) damage by the stated percentage. Against magical attacks, Blessing offers no protection.
Can I trade skill books between characters?
Skill books are generally tradeable as long as they have not already been bound to a character. Check your inventory to see if the book is marked as tradeable before you buy or sell it.
How many skill books do I need to bring a skill to Grand Master?
This cannot be predicted exactly as each reading attempt can fail. From M1 to Grand Master (via G10) at least 20 successful reading attempts are needed – plan for a significant buffer of books due to possible failures.
