Fleets in Ikariam
The fleet is essential for trade protection and maritime operations. Warships are built in the Shipyard and require Seafaring research. Each ship has different strengths, costs and tactical roles. A well-composed fleet controls sea trade routes and enables blockades against enemies.
The Shipyard is a separate building that occupies a building slot in your town. Each upgrade level reduces the construction time of ships. Invest in the Shipyard before you start large fleet productions — at low levels a single Ram Ship takes hours.
Ship Types
| Ship | Role | Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ram Ship | Melee | High HP, cheap | Low damage |
| Ballista Ship | Ranged | High damage | Low HP |
| Fire Ship | Area damage | Enormous damage | Destroys itself |
| Mortar Ship | Siege | Against port facilities | Weak in naval combat |
| Submarine | Espionage | Invisible | Low combat value |
Each ship type fulfils a specific role and should be deployed strategically. Ram Ships are the backbone of every fleet — cheap, robust and quick to build. Ballista Ships deliver the main damage but are vulnerable without Ram Ship protection. Fire Ships are disposable weapons with devastating area damage — use them only against high-value targets, not against individual ships.
Naval Battle Tactics
In naval battles, fleets fight in a turn-based system. Ram Ships form the front line and absorb enemy fire. Ballista Ships fire from a safe distance in the second row. Fire Ships ram into the enemy formation and cause massive area damage — particularly effective against tightly grouped enemies.
For a balanced fleet, the recommendation is 50% Ram Ships as a robust front, 35% Ballista Ships for main damage and 15% Fire Ships or Submarines depending on the situation. Mortar Ships are only worthwhile for sieges of well-fortified ports. Submarines can bypass enemy blockades and are ideal for scouting enemy fleet sizes.
Naval Blockades and Fleet Coordination
Naval blockades are one of the most powerful tactics in Ikariam. Station warships in the enemy port to prevent trade and troop transport. The blockaded player can neither send resources nor receive reinforcements. Combine naval blockades with land attacks for maximum effect.
In alliance wars, coordinate your fleet with allies. Simultaneous blockades of multiple enemy ports can paralyse an entire alliance. Communication and timing are crucial — a blockade that is discovered too early gives the enemy time to counter.

For a balanced fleet: 50% Ram Ships as the front line, 35% Ballista Ships for main damage, 15% Fire Ships or Submarines. Mortar Ships only for sieges. Fleet size depends on your strategy — defensively 10 to 20 Ram Ships are enough, offensively you need 50 or more.
Coordinate fleet actions with your alliance — joint operations overwhelm even strong individual fleets. Submarines are ideal for reconnaissance before sending your main fleet into battle. Fire Ships are disposable weapons — use them against high-value targets, not against small fleets.
