What are Spirit Stones and why do you need them?
Spirit Stones are upgrade items in Metin2 that are embedded into equipment with open sockets. A Spirit Stone improves the item by the value stated on the stone – provided the embedding succeeds. If the attempt fails, the stone shatters and leaves a stone shard in the socket. Spirit Stones are thus one of the central ways to permanently strengthen your equipment.
The system affects four equipment slots: armour, weapons, gloves and shoes. Each of these slots can have one or more open sockets, into which a Spirit Stone can be embedded respectively.
How do you embed a Spirit Stone?
Embedding is technically simple: drag the Spirit Stone from your inventory onto the weapon or armour that is also in your inventory. The target item must have at least one open socket.
- Success: The Spirit Stone sits firmly in the socket and improves the item by the stated value.
- Failure: The stone shatters. A stone shard remains in the socket, blocking it.
A blocked slot due to stone shards prevents further embedding attempts in that socket until the shard is removed. The procedure for shards is a separate step – more on that below.
Where do you farm Spirit Stones?
Spirit Stones drop exclusively from specific sources. Not every Metin provides stones – the drop rules are clearly defined:
| Source | Drops Spirit Stones? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Metins from Level 25 (Metin of Darkness and higher) | ✔ Yes | Main source for Spirit Stones |
| Great Ice Witch | ✔ Yes | Special boss as drop source |
| Lower-level Metins (below Level 25) | ✘ No | No drop, even with higher-level character |
| Metins in Demon Tower | ✘ No | Explicitly excluded |
| Metins in Dragon Room | ✘ No | Explicitly excluded |
| Metins in Nemere's Tower | ✘ No | Explicitly excluded |
| Metins in Red Dragon Fortress | ✘ No | Explicitly excluded |
| Metins in The Devil's Catacomb | ✘ No | Explicitly excluded |
Anyone who wants to farm Spirit Stones efficiently should focus on Level 25+ Metins in normal areas. Dungeon Metins are wasted time for this purpose.
Stone Shards removing – how to do it
Failed embedding attempts leave stone shards in the sockets. Shards block the slot and must be removed before a new attempt can be made. There are two ways:
- Blacksmith: The blacksmith in the game can remove stone shards from weapons and armour. This is the free way without shop currency.
- Item Shop Tool (29 DR): A special item from the Item Shop for 29 Dragon Rubies also removes the shards.
Important: If an attempt to remove shards fails, they are not removed. The attempt fails without improving or damaging the item.
Removing Spirit Stones from items – Spirit Stone Scroll and Item Shop
Embedded Spirit Stones that are successfully in a socket can be removed again. There are two methods for this as well:
- Spirit Stone Scroll: Removes the embedded Spirit Stone. The stone itself is returned. However: when using the Spirit Stone Scroll, stone shards remain in the weapon or armour. These must be removed separately afterwards.
- Item Shop Tool (49 DR): The more expensive shop item also removes the Spirit Stone, returns it – and does not leave shards behind. If you want a clean socket without extra work, use this option.
The key difference between the two methods: the scroll is cheaper but creates shard cleanup work. The shop tool costs 49 DR but saves the shard removal step.
Spirit Stones in alchemy – refining ore
In addition to equipment upgrades, Spirit Stones have a second important function: they are required when refining ore through alchemists. Spirit Stones of levels +0 to +3 are used in the process.
A practical example: if you want to process 100 ebony ore with a diamond alchemist into ebony, you must bring a Spirit Stone along with the ore and the Yang fee. The Spirit Stone is completely destroyed in this process – it is gone afterwards, regardless of the outcome of the refinement.
This means: Spirit Stones are a scarce resource in Metin2 with two uses. Anyone who does a lot of alchemy needs a constant supply and should farm Metins regularly or buy stones via the player market.
Tips for Spirit Stone strategy
- Check sockets: Always check how many open sockets an item has before embedding. A blocked slot due to shards reduces the item's potential unnecessarily.
- Secure high-quality items first: If you plan to use an item long-term, keep the Spirit Stone slot clean and don't waste it on cheap stones.
- Plan for alchemy needs: Spirit Stones for ore refinement are destroyed. Keep them separate to avoid draining your equipment stock.
- Don't forget shard removal: Blocked sockets due to shards are a common mistake. Go to the blacksmith immediately after each failure.
- Spirit Stone Scroll vs. 49 DR tool: If you want a clean swap of the stone, the shop tool is better value. The scroll only makes sense if you accept the shard cleanup work.
Frequently asked questions about Spirit Stones
What is the Stone of Return (Spirit Stone)?
The term "Stone of Return" is an alternative name for Spirit Stones in certain language versions of Metin2. In the English version, the official name is Spirit Stone. The item is embedded in armour, weapons, gloves and shoes with open sockets to enhance them.
From which Metin level do Spirit Stones drop?
Spirit Stones drop from Level 25+ Metins, specifically from the Metin of Darkness onwards. All Metins below this level and all dungeon Metins (Demon Tower, Dragon Room, Nemere's Tower, Red Dragon Fortress, The Devil's Catacomb) do not drop Spirit Stones.
What happens if embedding a Spirit Stone fails?
The Spirit Stone shatters and leaves a stone shard in the socket. The shard blocks that slot. It must be removed via the blacksmith or a shop item (29 DR) before a new embedding attempt is possible.
How do I remove a successfully embedded Spirit Stone?
Either with the Spirit Stone Scroll (the stone is returned but stone shards remain in the item) or with the 49 DR shop item (stone is returned, no shards). Both methods return the Spirit Stone.
Are Spirit Stones consumed in alchemy?
Yes, completely. If you have ore refined by an alchemist, you must bring a Spirit Stone (levels +0 to +3). It is destroyed in the process and is no longer available afterwards.
Can I embed Spirit Stones in any equipment type?
Spirit Stones can be embedded in armour, weapons, gloves and shoes – but only if the respective item has at least one open socket. Items without sockets cannot be enhanced with Spirit Stones.
Does the Great Ice Witch drop Spirit Stones?
Yes. The Great Ice Witch is, alongside Level 25+ Metins, one of the explicitly mentioned drop sources for Spirit Stones in Metin2.
What is the cost of removing stone shards in the Item Shop?
The shop item for shard removal costs 29 Dragon Rubies. Alternatively, the blacksmith in the game can remove shards without consuming shop currency.
