Civilisation fan looking for a browser alternative?
Civilisation is an established turn-based strategy game with a focus on long campaigns, tech trees and diplomacy. Those who enjoy the genre often look for a way to play similar mechanics in the browser between sessions — without installation, without full price, without hardware requirements.
This is exactly where Ikariam comes in: a free building and strategy game that runs directly in the browser. Research, economy, diplomacy and naval combat are available here too — but persistent in real-time and against real players instead of AI opponents per turn.
This page shows where Ikariam fits as a browser alternative, what concrete mechanics it offers and where Civilisation as a classic single-player strategy game continues to have its strengths.
What Civilisation does well
Civilisation is a turn-based premium strategy game for PC and console. Its strengths lie in the depth of the single-player campaign, an extensive technology tree spanning multiple eras, and an AI opponent that you can plan against turn by turn at your own pace.
If you're looking for a complete solo experience that you can pause and ponder for as long as you like, you're in the right place. However: it costs money, must be installed and doesn't run on every device.
Ikariam as a browser alternative: concrete features
Ikariam is set in ancient times and combines city building, research, trade and war. Instead of turns, everything runs in real-time — even when you're offline.
Research in four areas
In the Academy you can research technologies that you need for new units and buildings. There are four research areas:
- Economy
- Science
- Military
- Maritime
The research output scales with the level of the Academy and the number of scholars — at level 1 there are 8 scholars, at level 32 there are already 368.
Examples from the Science tree
In the Science area you will find, among others, the following research with actual point values:
- Well Construction — 24 research points
- Papyrus — 30 research points
- Espionage — 420 research points
- Polytheism — 1,428 research points
- Cultural Exchange — 8,694 research points
- Optics — 21,360 research points
- Archimedes' Principle — 444,000 research points
- Multiple levels of "Future of Science" as endgame research
Diplomacy and culture
Diplomacy is not just a side feature. With the research Foreign Cultures (1,032 points) you unlock the construction of embassies. Cultural Exchange additionally allows:
- Construction of museums
- Conclusion of cultural goods agreements
- Purchase of Phoenician merchant ships
A cultural goods agreement requires both players to own a museum. Only one agreement can be concluded per player. If one party terminates it, the agreement expires after 48 hours — enough time to prepare for any attacks.
