Overview of Population in Ikariam
Population is the foundation of every city in Ikariam. The more people living in your city, the more revenue you can generate.
To prevent population growth from stalling, you must constantly expand your town hall. Growth itself depends on the happiness of your people.
The population is divided into different groups: Citizens, Workers, Scientists and Priests. Each group performs its own task within the city.
Citizens
Your citizens are that part of the population not involved in resource gathering. They earn their living in the city and pay taxes, thereby forming your main source of income for gold.
Make sure they are happy or at least content, otherwise they will leave your settlement along with the workers.
Workers, Scientists and Priests
Workers
The workers in your city are responsible for generating the required resources. To hire workers, you switch to the island view and determine the number of your workers in the forest, quarry, wine plain, crystal mine or sulphur mine.
You must be careful to only hire as many workers as you have available – otherwise you will end up in the red with your net gold.
Scientists
Your scientists are tasked with acquiring research points. The more scientists you assign, the less net gold revenue you get, but the more research points you receive.
Priests
To be able to hire priests, you must first build a temple. They are needed to trigger the various wonders of the islands. If you want to hire more priests, you must expand the temple to the next level. A temple expanded to level 32 can accommodate up to 1092 priests.
Growth and Happiness
Growth depends on the happiness of citizens through museums, the expansion level of the tavern and the service in the tavern.
From the line in the town hall (e.g. "Growth: 0.95 per hour") you cannot directly see how long it will take until no more growth is possible. For this, the Wiki suggests a separate calculation.
Calculation: When does growth drop to zero?
An approximation function from the Wiki is:
- f(x) = 123.94 · (x0.1609)
- x1 = current happiness of citizens
- x2 = x1 minus (maximum number of citizens minus current number of citizens)
- f(x1) − f(x2) = time until growth drops to zero
According to the Wiki, the formula is only truly accurate for x > 50.
Example from the Wiki: With a current happiness of 187 and space for 80 more citizens, the difference in time values (290 h at 187 minus 265 h at 107) results in a remaining growth time of 25 h.
