Ancient Online Games — two worlds at Gameforge

Gameforge has two flagship games with an ancient theme: Ikariam, the classic browser strategy game set in a Greek island empire, and Metin2, the action MMORPG set in a mythological Asian world. Both have different gameplay focuses — and both are completely free to play.

Ikariam — ancient Greece in your browser

Build cities on islands

Ikariam transports you to the ancient Greek island world. You found a city, construct buildings such as a Woodcutter's Camp, Marble Quarry, or Academy, and exploit the island's resources. Wine, marble, crystal glass, and sulphur are the luxury resources that make islands unique and make trade necessary.

Ikariam's research system covers ancient technologies: Bronze Smelting, Shipyard, Fortress Architecture. Each piece of research unlocks new building types or unit options. The development path mirrors the growth of an ancient civilisation.

Trade and fleet

Trade in Ikariam is not a side system — it is a core pillar. You build merchant ships and exchange resources with neighbouring players. Alliances secure trade routes. Those without an alliance risk being plundered. The game rewards networking and diplomacy.

Metin2 — Asian antiquity as an action MMORPG

Three kingdoms, one world

Metin2 is set in a mythological Asian world: three kingdoms in perpetual conflict, demons emerging from mysterious stones, and warriors who build their power through quests and dungeons. The setting is not Greek-European like Ikariam, but is equally rooted in an ancient mythology.

The world of Metin2 is rich in history: Shinsoo (the red kingdom), Chunjo (the yellow kingdom), and Jinno (the blue kingdom) are not merely factions — they are ways of life with their own territories, quests, and cultural identities.

Character progression instead of city building

What city development is in Ikariam, character progression is in Metin2. Instead of upgrading buildings, you improve your Krieger, Ninja, Sura, Shaman, or Lycan:

  • Biologist Quests with NPC Baek-Go: hand in daily, collect permanent stat bonuses
  • Level Pets and equip them with skills — an independent progression path
  • Improve Equipment through alchemy and Metinstones
  • Master dungeons such as Nemere, Meley, or Tigerghost for endgame drops

Why both games are still relevant in 2026

Ikariam has been running since 2008 — over 15 years of successful browser strategy. Metin2 has existed since 2004, with a European launch in 2007. Both games have active player communities, regular updates, and a stability that short-lived games cannot offer. Anyone investing time in a Gameforge game is backing a developer that stands behind its titles.
